The Importance of Video Pipe Inspection

If you had a physical issue with your body, you would not just show up to Tampa General Hospital and ask a surgeon to start operating on you. Prior to surgery, the medical professionals at Tampa General Hospital would perform a series of tests to identify the exact problem, the cause of your problem and target the specific source that was causing it. The same holds true with a broken sewer line at your Tampa home. It would be reckless to start excavating your property without first identifying the specific location of the problem.

Video pipe inspection of your sewer line will identify whether you actually have a sewer problem, and if so, exactly where the problem is located.

Video pipe inspections are performed on plumbing systems for many different reasons, including:

  • You live in an older Tampa home or neighborhood with mature trees and want a camera inspection to prevent problems in the future.
  • You have been experiencing sewer line backups.
  • You have not had a noticeable problem inside your home, but there are large tree roots near the sewer line.
  • You are buying a home in the Tampa area and want to make sure there are no plumbing problems before you make your investment.

The process of video pipe inspection & how it works

Most plumbing camera systems consist of three parts: a camera reel, a recording monitor and a locator. The camera head is attached to a fairly rigid push cable. The camera head is inserted into the sewer and pushed downline. As the plumber pushes the video camera head into the sewer line, they can see the inside of the sewer through the monitor. The entire video can be recorded for later playback and review.

Often, problems can be corrected immediately. For example, if the issue is an overgrowth of tree roots, sometimes we can use a rodding machine. A rodding machine looks like a coiled spring cable with a cutter head attached to the end. It can cut the roots and they can be flushed out of the sewer. Alternatively, special chemicals can be used to take care of the roots.

If other problems are discovered such as a complete break or a collapsed pipe, it will require excavation. If digging is required, the specific location of where the line is broken will be known because the plumbing camera has a transponder that sends out a signal. A locator is used above ground to detect the specific location of the broken sewer line.
